This video of Sierra Wingate-bay really stuck out to me because it made me realize that you shouldn’t assume where somebody is from just because of the color of their skin. In this video Sierra, a person of color shares her experience when she was younger. She goes on to explain her incident with these two Polish girls who she met in her neighborhood. She felt insulted because they thought she wasn’t from America because of her skin color. Her story is a good example of a microaggression because the two Polish girls didn’t intend to hurt Sierra but still made her feel like she didn’t belong. When the two polish girls asked her where she was from they were being friendly at first, but they hurt her because they saw she was a person of color and automatically assumed she wasn’t from America. Another word that sticks out to me when I see this video is Nationality because it was Sierra’s nationality that caused an issue between her and the two polish girls.Sierra said that she was American but the two polish girls still made a mistake by looking at the color of her skin and assuming she was from a different country. This stuck out to me because I never imagined somebody would assume you are not from a certain place by looking at the color of their skin. It was interesting that these two Polish girls thought they could decide whether she was American or not. This type of situation has never happened to me but I can imagine how she must have felt when she was called “not an American”. I imagine she felt insecure about the color of her skin and surprised that they would even say it, especially because they don’t know anything about her. This impacted my thinking because it made me see how people can judge you by only looking at the color of your skin. I think you should teach this unit to the next 8th graders because it teaches them a little bit about racism, and this unit shows them different types of scenarios when you think you are not offending anyone but it’s the complete opposite and in reality you're seriously hurting them.
