Science Week
The I2 Science Week took place last week from Oct. 21st to the 25th. In STEM week, the only thing you do is science. You do activities about problems that could happen any place, and it teaches how to work in a group while doing hands-on activities. In fifth grade, our problem was something was wrong at Loon Lake. We had to figure out what was causing animals to die and fish to get smaller. One activity for the 5th grade was water testing, and making nets to prevent by-catch. By-catch is catching animals you're not supposed too. We figured out the problem at Loon Lake were these small mussels called zebra mussels. We made public service campaigns, or PSCs, about zebra mussels to help educate the public. It is supposed to be fun, and most kids enjoyed it (I didn’t personally but most people did :) Approximately 60 school districts did it in Massachusetts this week. In many schools it was the week that had the highest attendance so far. Many teachers are planning to do more of these STEM activities over the course of this year.

California becomes first state to pass a law that makes middle and high schools start classes later.
At middle & high schools across California, school start times have changed. High schools now start no earlier than 8:30am and middle schools start at 8:00am. Many kids are happy about the change - others, not so much. “Claire Judson, a 17-year-old junior at Claremont High School, said starting school later won’t make much of a difference for her. She chooses to get to school at 6:50 a.m. to take advantage of extra coursework.” Says the LA times. There are about 326 schools in California that contribute to this. Alex, a 5th grader at Monument Valley Middle school in Massachusetts said he would gratefully take another half hour of shut - eye. Ava, another 5th grader said she would again like this because she would have more time to pack up because she almost misses the bus practically every day. Scientists say middle school & high school students face sleep deprivation. Later school start times could change that. Personality: Guinea pigs, also called cavies, have very sweet personalities. They are social animals, so you should get more than one. If you don’t want babies, get 2 boys or 2 girls. Guinea pigs love to curl up on your lap quietly, but don’t let that fool you! They’re exactly the opposite when it’s snack time. :) Food: Guinea pigs are herbivores, which as I’m sure you know means they only eat plants. Two things they should always have in their houses are timothy hay (which helps their teeth get filed down) and dry food. Guinea pig dry food is just pellets you can get at a pet store. You should also give them greens such as romaine, lettuce, and celery in the morning and night for breakfast & dinner. The celery needs to be cut into small pieces, though, or your pigs will choke on the fibers. For water, purchase medium-sized glass guinea pig water bottles at a pet store. Whenever they’re empty, refill them. Houses: Guinea pig houses need to be big, so they can run around and get exercise. As mentioned before, they are social animals so have 2 pigs per house. For bedding, you can either buy bedding at a pet store or use fleece fabric and sew house liners with thick layers. If you chose the latter, wash them once a week. When the weather is nice, you can take your pigs out to eat grass in your yard. Make sure you have a playpen, or they could run away. Other: Make sure you hug your piggies at least once a day, or they will get lonely. When your guinea pig dies, bury him/her in the ground. If you get babies, make sure they stay with their mother before finding them a new home if you can’t take care of them. (Warning: guinea pig babies are supercute!) Blizzard bags. Some people like Blizzard Bags but for others it’s a cold subject. Some people enjoy Blizzard Bags because if there is a cancellation day you don't have to make it up at the end of the year. With a Blizzard Bag you know the exact date when you get out of school so you can make plans for the summer.
Some people think Blizzard bags are a bad solution to snow days because if less than eighty-percent of the school doesn't do them, then they might not count. According to the New Hampshire Conway Daily Sun , it costs them $600,000 dollars. That is not the price for all schools but it is very expensive. There are claims that it's good and bad, but that is your opinion. By: Peter Kay Every kid wants an extra day to relax, why not give it to them? Having a three day weekend would give students more time to relax from the stress from school. And, to make up for the lost time, they would have extra homework on school days and 15-30 more minutes on school days. Also, at home, kids will have more free time at home to exercise and relax (as long as they don’t play Fortnite!) Lastly, kids will have better attendance with an extra day to miss.
