The Student Council knows that the holiday season is the most wonderful time of the year, and therefore are planning tons of holiday events. Events include:

Are you stressed out? Especially if you’re in 8th grade, maybe you are experiencing moments of stress when you realize that there are lots of projects due on the same day. In 8th grade, there are lots of assignments piling up all around us, from homework, to tests, to projects and even weekly vocabulary. So, if you are agreeing with my words, then listen to my advice.
I am usually on top of my work at school, and a lot of that includes completing my work way before it is due. When I have vocabulary (8th graders) I do it on the weekend before it’s due. That gives me all school week to do other things that may have to be completed. When I have big projects, I finish them way before they need to be turned into my teacher. A couple weeks ago, the 8th graders had a reading assignment. We had to read the book, and complete multiple assignments (of choice) to total 45 points. I finished the book early, and I started the work before the other students in my class, quickly reaching to 53 points. My advice to all students drowning in their assignments is to stay on top of them. Get them done on time and you’ll spare yourself the anxiety attack when you realize that you have work due tomorrow. Just do the work, and you’ll be fine. Warning- children’s recess may be in danger!
Twenty three elementary schools in Orange County, Florida have a reduced recess or have taken away recess altogether. Schools around the country are reducing and taking away recess. Your recess could be next. There are so many benefits to recess. It keeps kids in shape while boosting children's thought process. Studies also show that it makes kids pay more attention to their teachers. Furthermore, recess prepares children for the real world, teaching them essential skills such as conflict-solving and how to be inventive. Forty percent of US schools cut their recess programs in 2011. Overall, seven percent of US schools have no recess. In 2005, schools in Peabody, MA hit national headlines and were greatly protested because of their new 10 minute recess policy. All in all, the act of removing recess must be stopped. You never know, your school could be next. Recently a group of students threw a music appreciation/fundraising festival. The students in charge (not including myself) were Evie and Aria Grossman, Zoe Holmes, Ben Kleinman, Lili and Tyler Sprague. The amount we raised was $900.00. This money is being distributed between chorus, band and orchestra. We want to thank the parents, teachers, and people who came and supported us. Also would like to thank all the local businesses that donated for the raffles, like Bike and Board, SoCo, Stockbridge General Store, Equus Yoga, and many others. Hopefully the music festival will become an annual event but until then…..$900!!!!! Week-long Hip-Hop Residency
This week, there was an exciting opportunity for some Monument Valley Students in grades 5 through 8. On Monday, November 14, Open Thought Productions, an amazing group of artists and performers came to our school for a residency. They have given up their time for us, to make an astounding and wonderful performance at Mahaiwe Performing Arts Center. This event takes place on this upcoming Friday, November 18. During this program, the hip-hop artists lead the group of kids into music through the ages. We learn about different time periods, and what music was played then. The music that we have practiced consists of : rock, jazz, blues, funk, and more! We learn how to play the music, and why it is important that our generations learn about this music. Is Year Round School A Good Idea?
Year-round school: A bad idea. Each year, children get excited for summer vacation. They make plans with friends, go on trips, and sometimes go to camp. However, 5% of American schools have now gone to a year-round schedule. This is a bad idea because kids need a break from school. School is an amazing thing, but sometimes children need a break from all that information. Kids also make plans for the summer, like going on trips and to camp. Parents look forward to summer so that they can spend time with their children. In year round school, there is unfortunately not much time for that. Also, some kids go to camp every summer, and have friends there that they look forward to seeing. In year round school, kids are not able to see their friends that they would otherwise never see. And, in order to pay for cars a and college, children use their summer to get a job and work for money. Sometimes kids need that money to support their families. This is not something you should take away from children. Interviews of real-life children: Q. Marti, Do you think that kids should go to school year round? A. No, I don't think that kids should go to school year round. Ḯ know I look forward to summer, and because of this, I don't think kids should have to go to school year round. (murmurs) It's a terrible thing… Q. Athena, what are your thoughts on this topic? A. Kids that have year round school are miserable. Why would you want to break children's spirits? All round school =equals= all round NO REASON TO LIVE. Telling a child that they have all year round school is impaling them with the harsh blade of adulthood. Q. Athena, what would you like to say to those that invented year round school? A. Can you give me a minute to think of something appropriate…? If you would please go to a planet where you understand that all year round school is disrespectful to childhood, i would greatly appreciate that. Q. Athena, how would you react if MVM was changed to year round? A. (silence) I would become so enveloped in disappointment and shock that I would not get out of bed for three years and I would give up on all my hopes and dreams. A Truthful Thanksgiving Poem.
Expectations are very high, Turkey, cranberry, gravy, pumpkin pie… Cooking ,cleaning, once again, forgot to turn on the oven. Calling friends, family too, stakes are high, FORGOT THE STEW! Phew! I saved it (one again..) Ding Dong they're here! OH NO! Happy Thanksgiving! October 21st, Monument Valley had a school-wide assembly with Open Thought Productions featuring Baba Israel, Yako 440 and Ken Fury.
