Should 5th Graders be able to go to school dances?
Should 5th graders be able to go to school dances? Yes, of course, the dances are like rewards and the 5th graders don’t get that award. The 5th graders are missing out on fun, when the rest of the grades gets to enjoy. Last but not least the 5th graders are new to the school so a dance will let them get to know everyone and it will build a better school spirit. One reason why 5th graders should be able to go to school dances is that the dances are like rewards. The 5th graders work just as hard in classes as all the other grades do and the 5th graders don’t get to go to the dance (the reward.) The 5th graders don’t get to have any fun. Another reason why 5th graders should be able to go to school dances because the 5th graders are new to middle school and the dances will let them branch out and find some new friends. It will also gain more school spirit and thatś great. I get why there are some negative comments on this topic, it could lead to 5th grade dating and most parents are not okay with that but the children are responsible enough to handle that. I still think that you should let 5th graders go to school dances, the dances are like rewards, the 5th graders will get to make new friends and it will build a better school spirit

This poem comes from a reflection about the character Littlest One, in the book Gossamer.
Littlest One Is like a Question without an answer, A pencil without an eraser, A heart without a soul She is someone who knows something, but wants more. Winning Essays! Berkshire's Real Women Essay Contest winners Aria and Maisy share their writing.3/28/2016 Aria Grossman, a MV 5th grader, won a top place award in the Real Women Essay Contest, for her essay about Temple Grandin . Temple Grandin by Aria Grossman Temple Grandin is an amazing and inspirational person. She improves the lives of farm animals everyday, by designing safe and comfortable facilities for cows and by educating people on the importance of making sure the animals we depend on are happy. She does all this while embracing her autism. When Temple was young, life was difficult. Like many autistic people, Temple thought in pictures. She saw specific images in her mind. Today, she’s grateful for this, but when she was young, her visual thinking made words strange and confusing, like a foreign language. Because of her autism, Temple had super strong senses and ordinary sensations were torture for her. I can't imagine what that must have been like, to constantly feel pain. Temple hated when things were out of place. The only way she could communicate as a toddler was by throwing tantrums. Her own father wanted to send her to a mental institution. Temple was often bullied at school. Little did the other kids know, the girl they were making fun of would influence the world. One summer, Temple visited her relatives’ ranch. She felt completely at peace with the animals. Her visual thinking and close attention to detail helped her understand them. She was able to prevent animals from getting scared. She engineered things for the ranch such as a gate that could open and close if you pulled a rope. She was doing something amazing - using her disability as a talent. As Temple spent more time with animals, she realized something. She wanted to study animals. People told her it was impossible. Not many people worked with farm animals, especially not autistic girls. Temple realized that if she wanted a chance of pursuing her unique dream, she had to study harder. She graduated second in her class. When Temple went to the stockyard, she was discriminated against not because she had autism, but because she was a girl. People threw tomatoes at her car. At first, she wasn’t even allowed in. But Temple was brave and confident. She followed her dreams. She proved she was as good as any man. Temple continued to help animals. She got more and more experienced and respected. She visited farms across the country. She designed systems for cows used worldwide. Today, Temple visits meetings to discuss autism and why being humane to animals is necessary. Temple Grandin inspires me in many ways. I care about animals and it comforts me to know there is someone who acts as a voice for them. It’s really amazing how the person who has made such a difference has autism. “Different thinking is where progress, and invention, and discoveries lie.” Temple says. My brother Colin is autistic. He’s different, but people like Colin and Temple show the world that different means special. Colin has taught me many things, like patience and kindness. Temple teaches me to embrace my differences. She shows us that through challenges, if you believe in yourself, anything is possible. Temple Grandin, shown below. Anne Frank by Maisy Seckler
“How wonderful it is that nobody need wait a single moment before starting to improve the world.”-Anne Frank Anne Frank, my true inspiration, hero and “real woman” has taught not only me but generations through the years to stay true to themselves and never give up. Anne has shown that through tough times you can pull through and make the best of the worst. She suffered through one of the world's most infamous tragedies, the Holocaust. However her inner strength kept her strong. Anne not only stood strong but taught me to be optimistic. When the Nazis came to Germany, Anne and her family had to move to the Netherlands for safety. During this time she had to make all new friends, but Anne being the the real fighter she was didn't mind She just went with the flow. Unfortunately, the cruel Nazis were taking over. This caused the Frank household and other residents to go into hiding together. Anne was forced to be quiet all day and keep her enthusiastic attitude inside her. Anne was a fun, bubbly, goofy teenager so to keep all this inside her must have been excruciating. Anne is a strong woman and there's no doubt about it. She is one of the most famous Jewish Holocaust victims. Her diary has given people a little image of her pain and agony, but no one will ever in a lifetime feel or envision the discomfort that these victims went through. When Anne was sent to Auschwitz, she was separated from her father, Otto Frank. Then in January 1945 Edith Frank, Anne's mother, died of starvation. Even though those were tough times for Anne, she stood strong and kept going. Anne fulfilling the part of a strong woman has inspired me to become one as well. I live with my two parents my dog and my two older brothers. It just so happens that one of my older brothers was diagnosed with a disease, Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, at the age of four. This created a situation where Charley, my brother, had to be strong. However not only did he have to be strong and push through the difficult times but so did the rest of my family. We have to deal with rude comments, discrimination and lots of other rude or unacceptable behaviors. This has created even more of a connection for me to Anne. The stories and quotes that I've heard from Anne have inspired me to get through tough times. Anne Frank will forever be in my heart. Anne Frank is my true inspiration, hero and “real woman”. by Olivia Thiemann The Effects of Social Media In this generation, a new form of entertainment has unleashed and begun to take a tremendous leap into the lives of many. It has taken effect by sneaking its way into personal lives, and creating a new reality, which some might say, is much better than the real one. At Monument Valley Middle School, social media has become more than just a place to post selfies and art. Teens have taken it, and created something new. To some students, it has almost become a comfort place, where they can openly share their opinions with others without feeling pressured. Oliver Maldonado, 8th grade student at Monument Valley agrees with this. “Talking on social media is much less awkward than talking in person. You don’t have to actually face the person, and can always block their number if they don’t agree with your opinion,” they explain. Gracie O’Brien, also 8th grade student at Monument doesn’t completely agree. “If I am talking to my friends on social media, it isn’t easier, because they already know my personality, but in front of others I don’t know as well personally, it’s easier to talk to them online because it isn’t as intimidating.” But what makes the internet less nerve-racking than speaking in person? Mrs. Congdon, Vice Principal of Monument Valley explains that many teens have begun using social media as a place to cyberbully others. “With my job, I tend to deal with most of the negatives of social media. You can’t see the other person’s feelings while saying hurtful things, but in person you can see the emotions, which tends to cause more guilt,” she stated. “Cyberbullying has the potential to happen in any grade. I notice that the older you are, the more mature you act with it,” Mrs. Congdon again explains. But, the more it is used badly throughout the school, the more kids begin to lose trust in eachother, which makes it harder to come to school without lacking confidence. But, not just the unpleasant sides of students have come out on social media. Oliver also noticed changes in people’s personalities while they are on the internet, versus off. “I notice people who are usually very shy in person, have very bold, strong personalities online.” Many others see this too. Alyssa Kend, 8th grade student at monument explains that not being able to personally interact with someone is easier, because it doesn’t allow you to show your true emotions, especially when you can’t see how they are reacting. “In some ways, It makes people bolder to not know what others are really thinking, because you can trick yourself to believe whatever you want,” she finished. Miranda Hastings, also an 8th grade student at Monument agrees. “People are more likely to be noticed if they express themselves more. Some are too shy to do this in person, so they chose to do it online.” But to some people, social media is a good result. “It allows you to connect with friends, and meet new people.” Mrs. Congdon again explains. “But I do understand that we need balance.” She explains that using social media is good, but be able to walk away from it when you need to. “It’s important to unplug sometimes, but since it’s so new, it’s exciting to use.” Social media is looked at from good and bad points of view. It has become the biggest break in technology, resulting in many ways at Monument Valley. But the real question is; What’s next? by Claire Sheridan
Whoopie-pies
Not only are whoopie-pies delicious, but they also hold a lot of history, and love in each bite. Whoopie-pies are the official treat of Maine, not to be confused with the state dessert, blueberry pie. Whoopie-pies are sold all throughout the United States. A whoopie-pie is a dessert with two fluffy cookies,( usually chocolate) and filling in between. The world's largest whoopie-pie was originally created in South Portland, Maine. The town of Dover-Foxcroft , in Piscataquis County, Maine, has hosted the annual Maine Whoopie pie Festival since 2009. At the festival there are many different kinds of whoopie pie vendors. Some flavors are, peanut, strawberry, chocolate, peppermint, and blueberry. They are a considered a Pennsylvania Amish tradition, and they have been known as Gobs in Western states. A Whoopie-pie is something that you should definitely try. by Ava B. Should there be more gym class?
I, Kyle Wellenkamp have been going around the 5th grade neighborhood in Monument Valley Middle School, about whether or not there should be more gym class.I am a 5th grader in Monument Valley and I believe that there shouldn't be more gym class because students already have two gym classes a day. They should have at least one gym class a day for the whole year. Another reason students shouldn't have more gym class is because students don’t get a lot of exercise in gym class. According to Scholastic News, studies have shown that in gym class you get only ⅓ of exercise, in the whole in time gym class. That means you can get ⅔ more of exercise. Also researchers have found out that at an average high school gym class, students only get 16 minutes of exercise even when the period is 45 minutes long. That means you can get 29 minutes more of exercise. Let's see what the gym teachers think about this. Mr.Vittum: Yes,if kids have more gym class their test grades go up. Mrs.Mason: Yes, it's more fun to come to school if there's more gym class. Instagram can affect children under the age of thirteen in many ways. This social media requires an age limit, however, many kids disobey it. This is just one of the ways Instagram can be a bad influence for the youth generation. According to Debate.org parents who banned their children from Instagram end up with their kids going onto Instagram behind their back anyways. One pro towards Instagram for kids under thirteen is it is a fun way to socialize with your friends and family. Instagram has a wonderful safety feature that can allow kids to have a private account so they can pick and choose who is looking at their photos. An age limit of thirteen is required for this app. Even though this age limit is suggested kids lie and make up a fake age to be a part of Instagram. This teaches kids to not only disobey, but it creates a bad life lesson. These are all the reasons Instagram is a difficult environment for kids. |
